Breast cancer kills thousands of women each year. These women’s families are all too aware of breast cancer, but every October the country celebrates breast cancer awareness month and goes pink with products and events to benefit breast cancer research. This awareness is important and does save lives.

The campaigns throughout the year and especially in October urge women to do monthly breast cancer checks to check for unusual lumps or chances in the nipple or breasts. These exams have saved thousands of lives. A women can catch the cancer earlier and her prognosis is much improved for it. The awareness campaigns educate women about when and how to do these checks.

By spreading awareness, a light is shined on the problem of breast cancer in women and more attention is given. This means people are more willing to donate to the cause and that more money is made for research and to help those dealing with the illness. Awareness events often raise money for these types of projects. When spreading awareness, often people are educated about just how dreadful breast cancer is and feel more compelled to make a difference and donate.

While awareness alone isn’t the key to erasing breast cancer, awareness does lead to more research and to more women getting check for the cancer. Both of those have and will save lives. The pink ribbons and awareness events are key to making sure that less women die because of breast cancer, a leading killer of women. The awareness campaigns can be helped by ordinary citizens pledging to help spread the word rather by wearing pink or by posting updates on social media. October is breast cancer awareness month, but awareness is important all year long.
