You would think that just because you were stricken with the horrible illness of cancer that your insurance company would take care of anything and everything. However, even though you are suffering there is no way that the insurance company is going to let you run free and clear of any costs? The truth is your insurance company is looking to charge you all the same and since you have something serious you can rest assured it is going to cost you quite a bit of money. So how do you keep your insurance costs low on these services?
If you have an HMO then make sure you are funneling all of your services through your primary care physician. If you are unwilling to do that and to get the proper referrals then you are going to see that almost none of the services are covered. You must make sure you jump through their hoops if you are hoping to get things covered.
If you have a PPO then the biggest thing you can do is to make sure you are working with doctors and hospitals that are in-network. Working outside of the network will usually cost you another 10 to 20 percent which for chemotherapy treatments and lengthy hospital stays could end up adding up to some really serious money. If you are unsure who the hospitals are in your network you can simply call up and they should be able to tell you exactly what hospitals are covered and which are not covered.
The other thing to look at is the out of pocket maximums. That is a big deal as most insurance policies have a maximum. This means that you can only pay a certain amount no matter how much the bills are. This is an important part of saving costs on your health insurance.
