Going to a pharmacy is never a cut and dry procedure. If you have drugs that are used for the treatment of cancer you should be prepared that going to your local pharmacy can even be more of a headache than you would ever like to see. There are a few instances where the whole process can be smooth but if you are not careful you could be coming home from the pharmacy empty handed.
When leaving the doctor’s office or the hospital itself you might want to take a few minutes and give your insurance company a call. Tell them what medication you are on and ask to find out if it is covered. You will be told rather quickly if it is or it isn’t but did you know that isn’t the only thing you should be asking them?
Make sure to tell them the quantity of pills and the amount of days those pills as supposed to last for. Why should you do this? Because when you go to a pharmacy and they process the medication they might not be able to get the insurance to pay for it because what the doctor is asking for exceeds the plan limits. Plans will only pay for a certain number of pills in a certain day range.
It’s best to work this out with your insurance company ahead of time rather than after the fact. You want to do whatever you can to make sure that you are going to be able to get the life saving medication you need.
If you give a call to the insurance company right before you head over there and there is a problem you will be right at the doctors office so it might be possible to get him to change it and for you to get started on your medication immediately.
