Breast cancer is like any other cancer, a disease that causes cells to grow out of control. Usually these cells grow into a lump or bunch together. The type of cancer is named after the place in the body where the tumors develop, so breast cancer is a tumor or tumors on the breasts.
Breast cancer always starts in breast tissue, where glands that produce milk are. These are called lobules. Most tumors are not cancerous, but are benign and are not dangerous. However, anytime a woman feels a lump, she should report it to the doctor. Finding breast cancer early is important and saves lives. Breast cancers taht are still in the lobules can often be cured and these patients often survive. Breast cancer tissue often breaks through the lobules and is invasive, when breast cancer gets to this point, it is much more difficult to treat.
The stage of the disease, or how much the cancer has spread and when the cancer was diagnosed makes a huge difference in survival rates. For this reason, a woman should check her breasts monthly for any changes and for any lumps. Monthly checks save lives.
