I am 49 years old and had a modified mastectomy in April 2000 with a tissue expander inserted after my sterotatic bx. showed invasive lobular carcinoma - my lymph nodes were clear and I have been on Tamoxfin since May - I also have multiple sclerosis and have been on a beta interferon B injection for the past two years.....I require IV steroids pre and post op but have not had a major relapse or a problem healing from my April surgery....I had a mammogram done last week on my right breast as a "routine" procedure prior to my final reconstruction surgery which will include removal of the expander and insertion of a saline implant along with my right breast being reduced and lifted for asymetry.....my mammogram revealed a suspious lesion as well as "minor changes" on my right breast since my last mammogram which was performed in January of this year - my cancer surgeon feels a mastectomy is in order due to the lobular invasive dx., my present MS status which would support my healing....my plastic surgeon agrees.....my HMO will not pay for the mastectomy because there isn't a definite malignancy dx., my ultrasound showed no cysts, and a biopsy could miss an invasive lobular, I can't have an MRI because of the metal tissue expander and the fact that I am not able to lay still without anesthesia due to my MS...my HMO will pay for the breast lift and reduction on the right side and after the tissue expander is removed they would agree to authorize mammograms, ultrasounds and mri's every 6 months for a period of two years....they told me I would be monitored and "watched" carefully....my cancer surgeon is appealing their decision based on the nature of my original breast cancer and my multiple sclerosis status...do you have any resources and/or information on MS and Breast Cancer? My surgeons and neurologists are located out of Yale New Haven in Connecticut and I am their first patient who has had lobular carcinoma and has been treated with AVONEX. Thank you for any help you may be able to give me. Kathi
