FAQ ]Posted by Hanah on 9/8/2002 from 198.81.18.178:In reply to: Reconstruction posted by Erika on 9/6/2002 from 207.69.117.167:
Two years ago I had immediate reconstruction (skin-sparing surgery and expanders inserted) following a bi-lateral mastectomy. Therefore, I never had a completely "flat" chest and the scars were always stretched and less glaring. I have since had nipple reconstruction as well (a quite miraculous procedure). I couldn't be more pleased with my decision. I just put on a regular bra and look pretty much like I did before - if not better.
That being said, the only "downside" if there is one is that the reconstruction requires peeling the muscle from the chest wall and the discomfort from this procedure adds considerably to the recovery time. In other words, with just the mastecomy, I probably would have been up and around and off any pain killers within a few days as opposed to a few weeks. However, to get reconstruction you have to go through that discomfort at some point, so why not do it all at once. I did not find the expanding process to be at all painful - and the surgery to put in the implants (after expansion) caused minimal downtime and discomfort.
If you want to talk further, please feel free to email me.
Good Luck
-Hanah
