“A Photographic Essay of Breast Cancer –One Woman’s Journey
Grand Opening Reception December 2, 2002”

Azusa, CA - Students of Azusa Pacific University are having a special art show at the Fire Hall Gallery at Azusa Pacific University West beginning on December 2 running through December 13, 2002. Veronica Madrid invites you to view her photographic essay at Azusa Pacific University (APU). Azusa Pacific University West Campus in the Darling Building is located at 701 E. Foothill Street, Azusa, California. Veronica was just 38 when she was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Married with two children she faced the disease all women fear most. Scared, feeling alone and needing support she turned to local non-profit organization Women’s Information Network Against Breast Cancer for information and support. She is now six months into her journey and wants to share with others how this project gave her hope and kept her centered in loving life. Photographer Christine Duran journalized Veronica’s breast cancer experiences in a compelling photographic essay. From three days prior to her surgery and continuing throughout her chemotherapy, the many faces of Veronica are shown in these compelling portraits. You will be sure to experience beauty, love, fear, determination and survival while studying these poignant photographs.

There will be a special opening reception on December 2, 2002 from 6pm through 9pm. The show is appropriately titled “CANCER SUCKS”. Local songstress, Sydnee Duran from Whittier Christian School of Independent Study will be entertaining at 8:00pm. Pastry chef, Lori Owens from Azusa Pacific University will be catering the event. The public is invited to attend and the event is free of charge. Donations will be accepted to help fund WIN ABC’s programs and services.
