Posted by Need Info on 12/19/2002 from 65.93.67.150:

I'll get right to the point. I'm 37 years old and had a lumpectomy 3 weeks ago removing a 2 cm infiltrating mammary tumor. The prognosis from my surgeon was very good. Stage 1-2, Low Grade (1), Low Risk for Recurrence, Estrogen and Progesterone Receptor Moderately Positive, 14 nodes disected and all came back clear of cancer. (Might not even need Tamoxifen) My confusion comes when I met with the Radiologist, and he said that my cancer shows that it might recur in the other breast because of my age and yes I should consider Tamoxifen plus possibly shutting down or completely removing my ovaries (fine by me, if it means it could prevent recurrence), but I don't understand, how I could leave the surgeon's office feeling so thankful, like I have a new lease on life, and then leave the Radiologist's office feeling so crappy (for lack of a better word). He didn't want to even offer anything positive. I literally said to him, "Well, I have a better chance of it not recurring, do I not". He agreed, but seemed so hesitant, saying if I was 50 or 60 years old then I'd only have about a 10% chance of recurrence, but he doesn't know exactly what my chance is at my age (not enough statistics) My question: Is he just being extra thorough, and trying to give me options to bring the risk of recurrence down even less, or does he not think I have a chance of surviving the next 10 or more years.
