Erika,
I waited a year-and-a-half to have reconstruction so I know what the prosthetic feels like. The prosthetics come in different sizes and they weigh the same as your breast did. There are ways to prevent it from slipping and moving around. You can have a pocket sewn into your bras that will hold it in place. Some department stores will do this type of alteration or you can check with your local American Cancer Society. Obviously, there is no pain involved with the prosthetic but the odd part was taking it off every night.
I waited to have reconstruction because I was overwhelmed by the whole idea that I had cancer and I wanted to concentrate on my treatment for that before worrying about my appearance. But after a while I got tired of the prosthetic and contacted a plastic surgeon.
My surgeon told me that it is becoming more common to do both procedures (mastectomy and reconstruction) at the same
time but that it was my decision to make. In the first weeks after surgery it was extremely painful but the long-term overall appearance and comfort to me was worth the pain.
Good luck with your treatment.
Pam from Minnesota
