(for the record - this web page keeps disappearing - saying page cannot be displayed- I click "back" and can continue however--)

History: Lumpectomy 1.3cm 12 years ago. No lymphnode involvement - and over 10 years - of good mammos with the same ol same ol microcalcifications with no change.

2 years ago....On a visit to a surgeon to have a benign Lipoma removed--the surgeon decides he finds a palpable spot on my old scar.(this wasn't found on mammo) He all but forces me to let him explore while doing the lipoma -- I agree to it.
The path report result is: microscopic foci of atypical ductal hyperplasia - felt to represent DCIS.......This dr did NOT suggest treatment OR mastectomy for almost 5 months - then all of a sudden, it was "life or death" if I didn't comply- I walked out...

2001--Last year I had a mastectomy -by a 2nd opinion surgeon who used the path report from the first dr. I was always troubled that the 2nd opinion dr - never offered me a new needle biopsy to make sure that the biopsy was indeed DCIS -I was intimidated into the mastectomy (I may have written of this here a month or so ago)and told I could die of cancer if I waited too long..........It's been a year since the mastectomy.

Well-I finally got info from anotherchat board - to put my mind to rest and get my slides, and have them re-done by an independent lab. I just received the news......

This path report conflicts with the initial DCIS pathology - in that, it says:" the focus is so SMALL - it is in the category of ATDH- and does NOT represent DCIS --- even though - another pathologist may choose to reference it as DCIS REGARDLESS of size!"
Well folks- isn't this interesting........and "independent" lab - has NO vested interest in whether or not I have a mastectomy------but a hospital lab - can "push the envelope" just over the edge resulting in a harvest of likely surgeries and or mastectomies for hospital surgeons as I see it....
I apologize for my disappointment in the medical field - and I do know there are more legitimate mastectomies than non-legitimate - but I feel I must at least make other women aware---how important it is to get an unbiased opinion !
If your surgeon uses the path lab at his/her hospital.....maybe get an outside opinion????
