FAQ ]Posted by Mary on 9/6/2002 from 12.217.7.100:In reply to: Re: Breast reconstruction after radiation posted by Shelly Blechman on 9/6/2002 from 216.117.218.7:
Thank you for your response. The reason that radiation was recommended is that the tumor was already growing into the chest muscle. They were able to get a clean border around the tumor when they removed it, but the border wasn't as big as they would have liked.
I did have a consultation with a plastic surgeon shortly after the original diagnosis. I didn't come away with any confidence in that particular doctor. There was no mention of potential problems after receiving radiation. After doing some research over the last couple months I think there are a number of things that either I didn't understand or that weren't explained well at that appointment.
I do have an appointment set up with a different plastic surgeon. One of my concerns was that I would be wasting time and money by keeping the appointment. Now I wonder if I would be better off delaying the appointment until after the radiation is complete.
I'm quite slender with a small bust. I'm not sure that I'm a good candidate for any reconstruction other than implants. After surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation, I don't want to go through reconstruction if I'm going to have a lot of problems. On the other hand, I'm still young enough that I don't want to deal with the prosthesis every day.
I did fill out a profile recently and received the information that you sent. Thank you all for the wonderful service that you provide.
