My mom was just diagnosed with Breast Cancer this past week. She had a lump in her breast for quite awhile without telling any of us. My sister and brother and I are so scared, we don't know what to do. It has already spread to her lymph nodes under her arm on the left side and by her collarbone. The surgeon who did the biopsy said he thinks its at a stage 3 or worse. She will have her first appt. with the oncologist next Friday. They are waiting for a referral to do a bone scan and more blood tests. The surgeon said he talked with the oncologist and they will probably do chemotherapy first to try and shrink the tumor before they do a mastectomy and then I guess more chemo and radiation after surgery. The surgeon said they can't remove the lymph node by her collarbone, they can only hope to shrink it with radiation. We've asked her why she waited so long and she said it was because she didn't have health insurance and as soon as she got it she went to the doctor. I know it was probably also because she was scared of what it could be and now those fears have been realized. I guess my question is, can she survive this? I don't know yet exactly what type of breast cancer it is but the fact that its spread to the lymph nodes is bad. She says she's ready to fight it with all she's got and we're with her 100% but I'm so afraid that it's too late for the treatment to stop it. I'm sorry this is long but I just needed a place to unload. Thanks for your time and any info you can give me would be greatly appreciated.
