Posted by Jae on 11/3/2001 from 152.163.201.59:

I was diagnosed in Augustwith breast cancer and had a lumpectomy in September and then a masectomy last week. I was hoping to have reconstruction as soon as possible, possibly during the mastectomy surgery as I had read that that was possible. However, I still have to go through chemo and radiation. I was told by several doctors, surgeon, plastic surgeon, and oncologist that I need to wait until after the radiation treatments to have the reconstruction due to the negative effects of radiation on the reconstructed breast. For the reconstruction the plastic surgeon I am to use skin from my stomach and an implant for the reconstruction. Has anyone had reconstruction and then radiation? How did the radiation affect the reconstructed breast? Does anyone have useful information on nipple reconstruction? Any information would be helpful. Thank you, Jae
