I understand your concerns over finding a suspicious spot on a mammogram and am sorry that you had to go through so many procedures to get a definitive answer. I am not sure what type of needle biopsy you had. If it is a fine needle aspiration (FNA), those can have false negatives. But if the biopsy was a stereotactic or core needle, those have less of a chance of giving false negatives results. Of course, you can be 100% sure when you do an excisional biopsy and remove the entire area for examination.

It seems that after the biopsy showing it to be benign and with closer examination through mammogram, the area is no longer suspicious for your radiologist. However, if you still have concerns, we always think it is wise to get a second opinion. You could take all your mammography reports and pictures as well as biopsy reports and take those to another radiologist for review.

Perhaps this will allow you to feel more at ease with the results. I personally have had an area show up suspicious in a mammogram and ultrasound and when I went in for a wire localization biopsy, they could not find the suspicious area via ultrasound. So thankfully, I went home and did not give it any more thought other than to feel relieved.

I want you to know that 80% of all lumps are benign, so the odds are in your favor, though if you gut is telling you to continue to check it out, I would follow those instincts until you feel comfortable with the results you receive.

If you would like, I can send you specific information about breast changes, breast self-exams and breast cancer, free of charge. I would also be glad to speak with you directly. You may email me with your telephone number or call me at 626/332-2255.
