I understand your concern about being over tested and am glad that your test results have come back negative. However, because of your history, I think it is wise that your doctors choose to err on the side of caution. As I am sure you are aware, finding something early provides you with the best prognosis.
The recommendations now are that everyone be screened for colon cancer starting at the age of 50 years of age, so you really are due for a screening test. I think this is particulary important as there is a link between colon and breast cancer.
There is a newer type of testing now available that uses 3-D imaging to view the entire body. This test exposes you to a minimal amout of radiation (as in an upper GI test), but you scan your entire body. And this is certainly less invasive than a colonoscopy. Log onto www.healthview.com to read about the technology. Although this facility is on the west coast, I am sure there is a place on the east coast that is doing this type of testing as well, although it is very new and there are not that many places that may have the technology yet.
Please feel free to contact me via email or call our office at 626/332-2255 if you would like additional information.
