My lump didn't show up on my mammogram either, but my surgeon followed up with me every three months and after six months, because it had grown in size and hurt, he decided to do a surgical biopsy and remove it. What he found obviously changed my life. The larger lump was just fatty tissue but as he was taking it out he found a smaller, harder lump behind it that turned out to be cancer. I've since read in breast cancer pamphlets and books that all lumps should be biopsied--whether with a needle or surgically removed. Sometimes it's hard to convince doctors of this though. Keep at them until they give you the care you deserve.
There's a great book out by Dr. Susan Love called "The Complete Guide to Breasts". You could say it's the "bible" of breasts/breast cancer information.
Keep asking questions until you get the answers that you understand and will give you some relief.

Good luck

Pam from Minnesota
