FAQ ]Posted by Kathi on 8/16/2000 from 152.163.213.68:I am 49 and had a modified radical mastectomy last April with a tissue expander insertion because of invasive lobular cancinoma found in my left breast. I also have Multiple Sclerosis and have been on Avonex injections since my diagnosis 2 years ago. I had a 6 month routine followup mammogram on my right breast in preparation for final reconstruction surgery in September. An implant will be placed in my left breast and my right will be reduced and lifted for symetry. My "routine" film showed a "problematic area" as well as minor changes not seen on the film done on my right breast in Jan. My cancer surgeon has suggested a mastectomy with reconstruction rather then proceeding with biopsies (which could be tricky in detecting lobular carcinoma) and I cannot have an MRI because of the tissue expander - my HMO will not authorize the mastectomy but they would authorize the breast reduction and lift on the right breast and after the tissue expander is removed they would authorize an MRI and followup mammograms every 6 months (as mammograms can't distinct between a lesion and scar tissue from the reduction/lift)..... my cancer surgeon is appealing this decision, however, even though I am at a major university hopsital (Yale) he nor any of the attending neurologists have had a breast cancer patient who also has MS on Avonex therapy.....does anyone know of an MS patient who also is on Avonex? Thank you for any help.
