Herceptin -
L
Have you heard about the Her2/Neu gene that has changed the way that researchers
have begun to understand and treat breast cancer? Dr. Dennis Slamon and
the team at UCLA/Revlon Breast Center discovered "a successful cancer treatment
that targets a specific genetic alteration."
The new drug, Herceptin, was tested in clinical trials during the past
10 years It was found that approximately 30% of women who have breast cncer
over express the Her2/Neu gene. In a large percentage of this group of
women, Herceptin proved successful at stopping the growth of tumors in
those struggling with metastatic breast cancer.
Herceptin avoids the serious side effects associated with traditional chemotherapy.
However, the trial results were more significant when using Herceptin in
combination with other chemotherapy drugs.
"There are many
heroes; one is Dennis Slamon."
In May 1998, researchers at UCLA's Jonsson Cancer Center announced the
positive results of the clinical trials. In September 1998, the FDA approved
the drug for widespread use.
At a special dinner held in Beverly Hills, on December 14, 1998, Dr. Slamon
and the UCLA/Revlon Breast Center hosted a celebratory dinner at the Four
Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Dr. Slamon welcomed the attendees and thanked
all the women who were the real heroines in the trials, as well as his
fellow researchers and the many individuals who made the long journey in
their fight against breast cancer to be present that night. Lilly Tartikoff,
Co-Founder with Lisa Paulsen of the Revlon Run/Walk for Women, spoke and
thanked Dennis Slamon for being a true hero.
There is a new hope for patients who are fighting the battle against breast
cancer. To see if you might benefit from this treatment, ask your doctor
to have your tumor tested for the Her2/Neu gene.
