It is very possible and does occur where core needle boipsies come back inconclusive. Perhaps there is a microscopic area where there can be malignancy, but the surrounding tissue has no malignant cells, then the results may be inconclusive.

Doctors try to avoid surgery if possible by using a less invasive means, such as a core biopsy, to detect a malignancy. Sometimes, it does not always work. If the doctors feel this area of suspicion is something they need to examine further, then taking the area out (excisional biopsy) is the next step.

I know it is very nerve racking and frustrating to have to go through all this, but hopefully the final results will be good and you can put this all behind you. The best thing that you can do for yourself is to try to remain as calm and positive as possible. Worrying will not change the outcome and the odds are in your favor...80% of all lumps biopsied are benign.

Please let me know the outcome. If you would like to receive information on breast health and biopsies, you may send me an email or contact me at our toll free number 1-866-294-6222.
