FAQ ]Posted by Shelly Blechman on 9/16/2003 from 216.117.218.35:In reply to: Biopsy...Think Twice.... posted by FairWind on 9/13/2003 from 205.188.208.108:
I am sorry to hear about your daughter’s predicament.
I would like to respond to your comments about biopsies. Actually, there are a number of screening tools that will indicate if something is suspicious and needs additional testing. However, there is NO definitive way to determine if something is cancerous except through a biopsy. While there may be cases of “tracking” of cancerous cells from biopsies from other types of cancers, there is no known evidence of that happening with breast cancer.
If what you are suggesting is true, then every woman who receives a needle biopsy and is diagnosed with breast cancer would metastasize to a stage 4, and that is NOT the case. In fact, the majority of women who are diagnosed with breast cancer do survive the disease.
As a parent of a child who died from cancer, I know you are always looking for answers. Unfortunately, there are no answers.
Right now, mammography, ultrasound and biopsies are the best tools we have for detecting breast cancer at an early stage.
I have seen women with large tumors and lymph node involvement have good outcomes and women with small tumors and no lymph node involvement have poor outcomes. There is no rhyme or reason as to why some women do well and others do not. I also know of women who have stage 4 breast cancer and battle with that for many years. There are always new medications and treatments coming available and it is always important to remain hopeful.
In the meantime, I will keep you and your daughter in my prayers. If there is anyway that we can help, we are here to offer our support to both of you. I have some wonderful books that I could send to you and your daughter that are very positive and uplifting and would help psychologically and emotionally.
Please contact me via email or call toll free 866-294-6222 if you would like these resources sent to you.
Sincerely,
Shelly Blechman
