Hello All-

My name is Melissa Pecor and I'm a doctoral student at Auburn University. I'm looking for women to participate in an anonymous study investigating the impact of body image changes due to breast cancer. Let me tell you a bit about how I got here...My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was a young teenager. I remember it being a very discrete topic and seeing her change dramatically both physically and emotionally. I was not given any information about what was happening to my aunt and why she looked so tired all of the time. I recall feeling very helpless and not knowing what to do to help her feel better. In my many conversations with my aunt, her comments regarding how difficult the process was for her since she did not have anyone to talk has stayed engrained in my mind over the years. I think this is partially what sparked my interest in becoming a therapist. I am now completing my doctoral training and have been a practicing therapist for several years. I would ultimately like to provide therapeutic services for both patients and their families struggling down this road together. To obtain a better understanding of some of the complexities in this area, I decided to focus my dissertation project on learning more about the struggles that women go through in confronting breast cancer. I am specifically interested in how women of ethnically diverse backgrounds think about and cope with body image changes that occur when confronting this disease. I hope to use this information in my work with cancer patients in the future. So I ask for your help in gathering this information. Here is some additional information about the study and a link so that you can complete it. Thank you for your consideration!

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY

Women diagnosed with breast cancer are requested to volunteer to participate in a web-based survey that will assess the impact of body image as a result of breast cancer. The information obtained from this study will be used to develop appropriate interventions to assist other
women in their recovery of breast cancer. We are specifically interested in responses obtained from African American, Caucasian and Latina/Hispanic women. Given the current lack of research on minority women, the participation of ethnically diverse women is particularly
important. Additionally, given the rising number of ethnically diverse women being diagnosed, it is important that information be gathered so that we can enhance our support and treatment for all women fighting this disease. Women who are interested in participating are invited to visit

in order to complete the survey. Your participation in this survey will be completely confidential and anonymous. This survey will only be available until August 9th. Your prompt participation is appreciated!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the investigator, Melissa J. Pecor at pecormj@auburn.edu

Thank you for your participation and assistance in this project!
