Posted by Shannon on 2/13/2003 from 128.210.66.132:

My past mammograms have listed things like benign calcifications with 'irregular and asymmetric fibroglandular tissue', palpable ridges, fibrocystic changes. It has also listed a history of architectural distortion. I went to the dr. three months after my last mammogram for a breast exam and my dr. ordered a nipple smear because I have a reddish brown discharge coming from one duct in one breast. I had a ductogram done, which only showed that the duct was dilated. It's been a year since my last mammogram and I can now feel a small, hard lump and the breast discharge is still there. This lump is located to the right of the nipple and is midway between the nipple and the base of the breast. The lump is about the size of a very large pea, and is firm and unmovable and isn't round, but sort of tube shaped. This lump does not change during my cycle and I know it wasn't there six months ago. I am scheduled for a mammogram in about four weeks. I don't want to run to the dr. every time that I feel a new lump, so how can I tell if a lump isn't a cyst or isn't benign? Can cysts stay in the breast and not come and go with your cycle?

Shannon
