Thank you for posting your message and for being such a caring granddaughter. We will be happy to discuss matching your grandmother with a Breast Buddy mentor in Southern California and also have a lot of other very helpful resources that we can discuss with her and link her to.

WIN Against Breast Cancer has several resources that I think will be very helpful, including our Breast Buddy Breast Care Program which matches women who are at least one-year post treatment with new patients to mentor and support them throughout the diagnosis, decision-making, treatment and recovery periods -- for at least one-year. We make every effort to match Breast Buddy patient mentors with new patients by age, geography, marital status, type and stage of breast cancer, type of treatment, hobbies and on and on. We will be delighted to match your grandmother with another woman who experienced many of the thoughts, feelings, questions and emotions that she may be experiencing.

We also have trained information specialists in our offices that can speak with you and your grandmother one on one to determine the best materials to send to both of you (all free of charge). If you have not done so already, you are more than welcome to call us toll-free at (866) 2 WIN ABC (294-6222).

WIN Against Breast Cancer will also be delighted to send you both out an educational kit of information, specific to your grandmother’s diagnosis, treatment and needs, including videotapes about adjuvant therapy, questions to ask your doctor about breast cancer, an extensive WIN ABC Breast Cancer Resource Guide, the books “Fighting Cancer” and “Guide for Cancer Supporters” and much more; free of charge. Other educational materials we can send to you both include information regarding breast self-exam and breast anatomy, understanding breast changes, questions to ask your health plan about exemplary care (found on our web site under help yourself – 10 key questions for women to ask their health plans) and breast cancer myths.

There is a special Personal Profile Form on our web site (blue link at the top of this page) that if your grandmother has not done so already, we encourage her to fill out and e-mail to us to help us best meet her needs and we also encourage both of you to call us directly. Your information will be kept confidential.
