FAQ ]Posted by Shelly Blechman on 10/16/2002 from 216.117.218.7:In reply to: Breast Cyst posted by AliceB on 10/11/2002 from 68.101.24.107:
I understand your concerns over finding a lump. And it is good that you went for a clinical breast exam as there is no way to be able to determine precisely what is going on without a proper examination by a doctor.
While you stated that you found a cyst, you did not say if the painful area behind your nipple is the cyst to which you were referring.
There are any number of things that might be causing this pain. As 80% of all breast lumps are benign, the likelihood that it is cancer is small. There are many benign breast conditions including: infection, cysts or a fibroadenoma. As you mentioned a cyst, this is a fluid filled sac. They occur most often in women between the ages of 35 to 50. They can become enlarged and tender, sometimes even painful, prior to the menstrual period. They can be treated with observation or by aspirating the fluid with a fine needle. Cysts usually show up clearly on an ultrasound, so I think it is good that your doctor has ordered that in addition to the mammogram.
Please keep in mind that we are not health care providers and that it is very difficult to render an opinion without knowing all the facts of any one particular case. We always recommend that you pursue your question(s) with your own physicians. You should feel fully empowered to obtain a satisfactory answer and feel free to seek a second or third opinion.
If you would like, I can send you specific information about breast changes, breast self-exams and breast cancer, free of charge. I would also be glad to speak with you directly. You may email me with your telephone number or call me toll free at (866) 2 WIN ABC (294-6222).
