FAQ ]Posted by Renee Gaines on 9/5/2002 from 216.117.218.7:In reply to: inflammatory carcinoma posted by Sue on 9/5/2002 from 66.183.109.54:
Dear Sue,
Ask your sister to be persistent with the oncologist and to inquire why the chemotherapy is not beginning sooner. While researching the subject, I did not see the actual time chemotherapy should begin, however, I did see 'as soon as possible'. What that means is subjective, I guess.
Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) accounts for 1% of all breast cancers. It is extremely rare and of course the most elusive to properly diagnose. It takes an astute and conscientious physician to properly diagnose this type and the treatment is considered aggressive. It ususally begins with chemotherapy followed by surgery and radiation and often times then Tamoxifen for 5 years.
IBC does not present with a lump or show up on a mammogram. It is often misdiagnosed as a rash, breast infection, bite or even shingles.
Please complete the personal profile form at the link below and we will send a patient education packet for you and your sister.
Warmest regards,
Renee D. Gaines
