FAQ ]Posted by Shelly Blechman on 5/24/2002 from 216.246.34.217:In reply to: breast cancer metastases posted by mary jean wolfe on 5/22/2002 from 24.49.79.37:
If your lymph nodes are negative, that is very good. However, I cannot give you any specific information regarding the chances of metastasis or recurrence if your lymph nodes are negative (nor could I if they were positive). Certainly the prognosis is much better when you have an insitu cancer or one that has not spread to the lymph nodes. Also, a recurrence is not the same as metastasis. Metastasis just means that the cancer has spread from the original site to another part of the body. You can have a metastasis at the time of your original diagnosis. If you have a recurrence (after treatment), it can be local (in the same area as the original site) or distant (which would indicate metastasis).
There are many factors to take into consideration regarding a recurrence: type of breast cancer, aggressiveness and size of tumor, your age, ER/PR status, Her2Neu positive or negative, response to treatment and overall attitude, just to mention a few. There is no simple answer as this is not a simple disease.
It is always best to speak with your health care team regarding any questions or concerns you have about your treatment and outcomes. You should also feel free to seek second opinions when you need additional confirmation of information or feel unsure about certain recommendations or opinions.
We would be glad to speak with you and send you some information that may help you deal with certain issues if you would like. Please contact us via email or our toll free number listed below.
