Cathy,
The crystals that you describe sound like microcalcifications. While microcalcifications in of themselves can be harmless, when they develop in clusters or numerous ones in an area, they become highly suspicious.

A stereotactic biopsy is performed when a lesion appears on a mammogram but is not palpable. A radiologist uses imaging tools, ie a mammogram machine with special paddles that are see thru and can be tilted to different degrees to allow the right 'mirror' images to be taken by xray. Two pictures are taken 'stereo' and then the needle is guided to the area that is suspicious.

This biopsy can be performed either under general anesthesia or local anesthesia.

We hope that this information is helpful. If there is something else you should need from us, please contact us through the personal profile form at http://winabc.org/newweb/resources/personal-profile-form.htm
