Jeanne,

I had my right breast removed in May 1999. I wasn't sure about reconstruction at the time and my surgeon reassured me that I could make that decision at a later date. He said let's just focus on getting the cancer out of my body and doing everything I needed to do to make sure it didn't come back. After I hit my second year of being cancer-free, I decided it was time for me to have the reconstruction done. I went through the procedure last summer and am very happy with the results.
I think my point is is that the decision to have breast reconstruction is a personal one and one that you should make when you're ready and fully informed. But the most important thing right now is to get the cancer out of you. Once the cancer is gone, you've got the rest of your life to decide if you want to go ahead with reconstruction.

Good luck with your continued recovery, and I hope all works out well for you.

Pam from Minnesota
