FAQ Posted by Diane on 3/13/2001 from 216.86.76.247:I am hoping some one can help me get my facts straight! First I will tell you the situation, and then I will list a couple of questions.Hopefully that is ok.
My mother was diagnosed with breast cancer 6 yrs ago (at the age of 59) . She had a modified radical mastectomy
on her right breast, and no adjuvant (?) treatments (chemo, radiation,or horomone). All of her lymphnodes were removed , and all were clear.
In January 2001,after much debating between 2 Drs. she got a 3rd opinion of a mammogram ,because she thought
she was starting to feel a lump. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in her left breast. She had another modified radical mastectomy, and only a few lymphnodes removed (which are clear). The Oncologist is putting her on Tamaoxafin, and has discussed Chemotherapy with her ,,,,,,,,but says that the tamoxafin gives her a 25% better chance of staying cancer free, and chemo only adds another 7% to that. I am finding this so hard to believe, I thought Chemotherapy is standard cancer treatment, and I am finding very hard to research my mothers options (and statistics) in treatment, since i'm not sure which catagory she fits in. We all want whats best for her to be healthy, and are willing to do whatever is necesssary.
ok on to the questions........
1. Is this a recurrance of original breast cancer? What I have read of recurrance is it's usually in the same breast or metastised. Not too much info available on our situation.
2. How can it be possible that chemo therapy can only add another 7% ? Is this dr. saying its not neccessary?
3. I am a 34 yr old female , do I still wait until 40 to have my first mammogram?
4. Do you know where I can find information on breast cancer in both breasts but so many yrs apart?
Thank you for any and all information you have.
