Dear Debbie:
WIN Against Breast Cancer will be happy to send your sister, free of charge, a beautifully illustrated book entitled "My Mommy Has Cancer", written by a breast cancer survivor for her young son to better understand, in a clear and non-threatening way, what was going on with her as she entered treatment.
We have many other resources (all free of charge) that I know your sister (and you! – we have a book we will be happy to send to you entitled "Guide for Cancer Supporters" written by Richard and Annette Bloch) can benefit from.
Visitors to our site can fill out the Personal Profile Form at the top of this page (all information remains confidential) and/or telephone our office at (626) 332-2255 to request a copy of this wonderful book, WIN Against Breast Cancer’s Resource Guide, and other materials, based upon your needs.
In my own case, (I had a mastectomy and immediate breast reconstruction) my nephew, when he was 4-years old walked in on me as I was undressing, stripped from the waist up. His reaction was priceless. He looked up at me, pointed and said "boobies" without batting an eye. I called my plastic surgeon the next day and thanked him again for his tremendous work!
Kids are so resilient, Debbie. I think that they are capable of processing and understanding more than we sometimes give them credit for. My niece was 6-years old at the time and had also stumbled in on me as her brother had. My brother, sister-in-law and I were very up-front with Paige and Brendon about my experiences with breast cancer. They were, and still are, very understanding and comfortable asking me questions about breast cancer. And while they understand the seriousness of the disease, they have "done me proud" in the way they quickly adjusted to my diagnosis and surgery and in their burgeoning activism in raising awareness about breast cancer in their schools and community.
Please do encourage your sister to contact us so that we can work with her one-on-one to best meet her needs and that of her family. The same goes for you! We would like to send you a booklet on breast anatomy and breast self-exam so that while you are advocating for your sister and niece, you also advocate for yourself.
Your sister and niece are blessed to have such a loving and caring sister and aunt.
You have my warmest personal regards,
Betsy
