I think we might have already spoken but just in case...this treatment protocol is usually done when the mass is particularly large (more than 5 cm). Most cases that I am aware of are successful in shrinking the tumor, or making it go away entirely. The individual may then choose a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Studies have shown no difference in survival rates between those who have a lumpectomy vs. those who have a mastectomy. The advantages are that if a woman chooses to have a lumpectomy, the smaller the tumor, the less of her breast will need to be removed.
