FAQ ]Posted by M Harrison on 7/30/2000 from 24.240.77.180:I am 52 years old, and had a mammogram 2 weeks ago. I had not had a mammogram in about 4 years. The doctor called me and told me an abnormality showed up that was not there the last time. He said there was "nodular density" in the right breast, and the radiologist suggested a follow-up mammogram in 6 months. I had been having pain in the right breast, at times severe enough to keep me awake at night. I had a hysterectomy for fibroid tumors at 39, and have been on 2mg estrogen for about 5 years.
My best friend is a breast cancer survivor, and is very active in breast cancer support groups. She hit the roof when I told her, and is encouraging me to have a biopsy NOW and not wait the 6 months. She tells me there are numerous women in her support groups that were told the same thing, and it turned out to be cancer. That six month time frame could possibly have prevented chemotherapy for them.
I am single, with no health insurance. I could fiance a biopsy - but if it turned out to be malignant, it would be financially devastating to me. I have made an appt with the doctor to consult with him (my idea) about the report, and ask him just what it showed, other than "nodular density".
Any advice on the risks of playing the waiting game? I have done much research on the internet, and understand about the categories of abnormalities, and the radiology association's suggestions for dealing with them. In my case, it says to follow up in six months, but to some women, any risk is too great. Also says that the patient should be aware that the mammogram is being followed up on because is might NOT be benign. I am confused, and frightened, and feel like I'm taking big risks with my health, but on the other hand, it might be nothing at all. Thank you so much for any guidance from your experiences.
