FAQ Posted by Linda Roberts on 5/21/2000 from 216.76.209.37:In reply to: Re: breast calcifications posted by Betsy Mullen on 4/1/2000 from 205.188.192.27:
I am a 52yr old, who 5 1/2 yrs ago was mammogrammed & they found microcalcifications. Having a mother and younger sister, who both had breast cancer, my doctor chose to do an excisional biopsy. The biopsy in the OR indicated that it was not malignant. On further examination it was determined that not only was it malignant, they did not have clear margins. A second biopsy was preformed and the result was clear margins. I received radiation for 6 weeks. For 5 1/2 yrs. I have returned for follow up mammograms. After this mammogram (5/00), they recalled me to do further studies. The magnifications showed calcifications. The radiologist reported to me that the calcifications were not the malignant type and to return for my mammogram in one year. As the previous mammogram (5/99) did not show any calcification, given my history, and my immediate family history, I am uncomfortable waiting a year to determine if there are any changes. It is impossible to determine when these calcifications appeared. Have they been there a year or did they appear a week ago? The radiologist did not do ultrasound. This may not have been possible as I have very small breasts and the calcification seen was very near the chest wall. I would like your advice on the next course of action, if any,I should take. Should I be seeing another oncologist or another radiologist?
