FAQ Posted by Theresa on 2/28/2000 from 152.163.206.214:Let me start out by saying I am a healthy 25 yr old female, however, I do smoke. My mom found a lump in her breast at age 43. She didn't have insurance so she just ignored the lump.(stupid, I know) She finally did go to the doctor, but it was too late as they had to do a radical mastectomy. My mother recieved mega doses of chemo for a while and then was told she was cancer free. Well about a year later, we found out she not only had breast cancer in the other breast, but it had spread throughout her body too. It was very hard for me at age 20 to watch my 46 yr old mother die a horrible death. She was in and out of comas and had a lot of pain, ect..... I have nightmares all the time of how she died. I am now a mom of 2 little girls and I literally cry thinking that when I am in my forties, I am going to leave them and die, just like my mom did! This is really becoming a major issue in my life as I have this HUMONGOUS FEAR imbedded in my brain. My mom was the first in her family to have breast cancer- her mother just died last week of natural causes (age 88) and her sister is still alive and healthy (age 50). I know I need to stop smoking, but do you think my mom's cancer was just a fluke thing seeing as though no other female in her family got it or do you think it is going to passed to me? Also, one more piece of info- my mother was an alcoholic for 6 years and then recovered. I heard that excessive consumption of alcohol does play a part in breast cancer- I on the other hand, do not drink! Any feedback would be appreciated. Also, I do go to the GYN faithfully every year and get checked. My OB/GYN suggested that maybe I start taking tomixifan at age 30- what does this pill even do?
